Element Copper (Cu), Group 11, Atomic Number 29, d-block, Mass 63.546. Sources, facts, uses, scarcity (SRI), podcasts, alchemical symbols, videos and images. Zinc Deficiency. Zn deficiency has been reported in horses, and can have some moderate consequences. Signs of Zn deficiency include: hair loss. In this post, I discuss how excess copper can lower zinc levels and lead to acne and all sorts of other distressing problems. A copper overload in your body may be causing long-term exhaustion, high and low emotions, migraine headaches, and more. Zinc is a chemical element with the symbol Zn and atomic number 30. It is the first element in group 12 of the periodic table. In some respects zinc is chemically. Zinc is a necessary mineral for clear skin, yet over 2 billion people aren't getting enough zinc. Are you getting enough of this clear skin mineral? Want to know more about zinc? Learn about the benefits of zinc, zinc supplements and foods with zinc from Dr. Andrew Weil, your trusted health advisor. Read my ultimate guide to zinc supplements, how to know if you have a zinc deficiency and how your body uses this vital mineral. Basic Description. From a food standpoint, zinc may be a less familiar dietary mineral than iron or calcium or sodium, but it is no less important to our metabolism. Zinc - Wikipedia. Zinc, 3. 0Zn. General properties. Pronunciation. ZINGKAppearancesilver- gray. Zinc in the periodic table. Atomic number(Z)3. Group, periodgroup 1. Blockd- block. Element category transition metal, alternatively considered a post- transition metal. Standard atomic weight(Ar)7. It is the first element in group 1. In some respects zinc is chemically similar to magnesium: both elements exhibit only one normal oxidation state (+2), and the Zn. Mg. 2+ions are of similar size. Zinc is the 2. 4th most abundant element in Earth's crust and has five stable isotopes. The most common zinc ore is sphalerite (zinc blende), a zinc sulfide mineral. The largest workable lodes are in Australia, Asia, and the United States. Zinc is refined by froth flotation of the ore, roasting, and final extraction using electricity (electrowinning). Brass, an alloy of copper and zinc in various proportions, was used as early as the third millennium BC in the Aegean, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, Kalmykia, Turkmenistan and Georgia, and the second millennium BC in West India, Uzbekistan, Iran, Syria, Iraq, and Israel. The mines of Rajasthan have given definite evidence of zinc production going back to the 6th century BC. German chemist Andreas Sigismund Marggraf is credited with discovering pure metallic zinc in 1. Work by Luigi Galvani and Alessandro Volta uncovered the electrochemical properties of zinc by 1. Corrosion- resistant zinc plating of iron (hot- dip galvanizing) is the major application for zinc. Other applications are in electrical batteries, small non- structural castings, and alloys such as brass. A variety of zinc compounds are commonly used, such as zinc carbonate and zinc gluconate (as dietary supplements), zinc chloride (in deodorants), zinc pyrithione (anti- dandruff shampoos), zinc sulfide (in luminescent paints), and zinc methyl or zinc diethyl in the organic laboratory. Zinc is an essential mineral perceived by the public today as being of . Other metals long known to form binary alloys with zinc are aluminium, antimony, bismuth, gold, iron, lead, mercury, silver, tin, magnesium, cobalt, nickel, tellurium, and sodium. Soil contains zinc in 5–7. Seawater has only 3. Chalcophiles formed as the crust solidified under the reducing conditions of the early Earth's atmosphere. Since exploration and mine development is an ongoing process, the amount of zinc reserves is not a fixed number and sustainability of zinc ore supplies cannot be judged by simply extrapolating the combined mine life of today's zinc mines. This concept is well supported by data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which illustrates that although refined zinc production increased 8. About 3. 46 million tonnes have been extracted throughout history to 2. Zn is the most abundant isotope (4. The other isotopes found in nature are 6. Zn (2. 8%), 6. 7Zn (4%) and 6. Zn (1. 9%). Several dozen radioisotopes have been characterized. Zn, which has a half- life of 2. Zn with a half- life of 4. Zn has the longest half- life, 1. The nucleus of a metastable isotope is in an excited state and will return to the ground state by emitting a photon in the form of a gamma ray. Zn has three excited states and 7. Zn has two. The decay product resulting from electron capture is an isotope of copper. It is a moderately reactive metal and strong reducing agent. When compounds in this oxidation state are formed, the outer shells electrons are lost, yielding a bare zinc ion with the electronic configuration . Because of this some of the equivalent salts have the same crystal structure. Zinc tends to form bonds with a greater degree of covalency and much more stable complexes with N- and S- donors. Most zinc(I) compounds contain formally the . The diamagnetic nature of the ion confirms its dimeric structure. The first zinc(I) compound containing the Zn–Zn bond, (. The oxide Zn. O is a white powder that is nearly insoluble in neutral aqueous solutions, but is amphoteric, dissolving in both strong basic and acidic solutions. In stronger alkaline solutions, this hydroxide is dissolved to form zincates (. Diethylzinc ((C2. H5)2. Zn) is a reagent in synthetic chemistry. It was first reported in 1. K3. Co(CN)6 and 1 g of KCl. O3 is dissolved on 1. Paper is dipped in the solution and dried at 1. One drop of the sample is dropped onto the dry paper and heated. A green disc indicates the presence of zinc. Zinc ores were used to make the zinc–copper alloy brass thousands of years prior to the discovery of zinc as a separate element. Judean brass from the 1. BC contains 2. 3% zinc. The pills were used for sore eyes and were found aboard the Roman ship Relitto del Pozzino, wrecked in 1. BC. This may refer to small quantities of zinc that is a by- product of smelting sulfide ores. BCE). The smelting of metallic zinc here, however, appears to have begun around the 1. AD. Some alchemists called this zinc oxide lana philosophica, Latin for . Zinc was regularly imported to Europe from the Orient in the 1. Before it was isolated in Europe, it was imported from India in about 1. CE. In 1. 79. 8, Johann Christian Ruberg improved on the smelting process by building the first horizontal retort smelter. The units were stacked in series to make the Voltaic cell, which produced electricity by directing electrons from the zinc to the copper and allowing the zinc to corrode. China produced 3. If deposits of zinc carbonate, zinc silicate, or zinc spinel (like the Skorpion Deposit in Namibia) are used for zinc production, the roasting can be omitted. Pyrometallurgy reduces zinc oxide with carbon or carbon monoxide at 9. Smelter slag and other residues contain significant quantities of metals. About 1. 1 million tonnes of metallic zinc and 1. Belgian towns of La Calamine and Plombi. After increasing 1. Arctic troposphere found that the concentrations there did not reflect the decline. Anthropogenic and natural emissions occur at a ratio of 2. Levels of zinc in excess of 5. Zinc levels of 2. In 2. 00. 9 in the United States, 5. Galvanization is used on chain- link fencing, guard rails, suspension bridges, lightposts, metal roofs, heat exchangers, and car bodies. For example, cathodic protection of a buried pipeline can be achieved by connecting anodes made from zinc to the pipe. Powdered zinc is used in this way in alkaline batteries and the case (which also serves as the anode) of zinc–carbon batteries is formed from sheet zinc. Zinc is the primary metal in American one cent coins (pennies) since 1. In 1. 99. 4, 3. 3,2. United States. The low melting point together with the low viscosity of the alloy makes possible the production of small and intricate shapes. The low working temperature leads to rapid cooling of the cast products and fast production for assembly. An alloy of 9. 6% zinc and 4% aluminium is used to make stamping dies for low production run applications for which ferrous metal dies would be too expensive. In the wake of lead concerns, zinc appears in weights for various applications ranging from fishing. Zinc oxide is widely used as a white pigment in paints and as a catalyst in the manufacture of rubber to disburse heat. Zinc oxide is used to protect rubber polymers and plastics from ultraviolet radiation (UV). Because of this, zinc oxide used in nuclear reactors as an anti- corrosion agent is depleted of 6. Zn before use, this is called depleted zinc oxide. For the same reason, zinc has been proposed as a salting material for nuclear weapons (cobalt is another, better- known salting material). However, it is redox inert and thus can serve such a function only indirectly. Zinc becomes depleted in the body during diarrhea, but recent studies suggest that replenishing zinc with a 1. Similar claims appear in web forums. Zinc preparations can protect against sunburn in the summer and windburn in the winter. In presence of water, formation of the organomagnesium halide will fail, whereas the Barbier reaction can take place in water. On the downside, organozincs are much less nucleophilic than Grignards, and they are expensive and difficult to handle. Commercially available diorganozinc compounds are dimethylzinc, diethylzinc and diphenylzinc. In one study. The catalysts are nickel and palladium. A key step in the catalytic cycle is a transmetalation in which a zinc halide exchanges its organic substituent for another halogen with the palladium (nickel) metal center. The Fukuyama coupling is another coupling reaction, but it uses a thioester as reactant and produces a ketone. Zinc has found many applications as catalyst in organic synthesis including asymmetric synthesis, being cheap and easily available alternative to precious metal complexes. The results (yield and ee) obtained with chiral zinc catalysts are comparable to those achieved with palladium, ruthenium, iridium and others, and zinc becomes metal catalyst of choice. The theoretical and computational description of this zinc binding in proteins (as well as that of other transition metals) is difficult. Most zinc is in the brain, muscle, bones, kidney, and liver, with the highest concentrations in the prostate and parts of the eye. It also regulates apoptosis. A 2. 00. 6 study estimated that about 1. Arabidopsis thaliana found 2. A coordinate covalent bond is formed between the terminal peptide and a C=O group attached to zinc, which gives the carbon a positive charge. This helps to create a hydrophobic pocket on the enzyme near the zinc, which attracts the non- polar part of the protein being digested. Each of the nine or ten Zn. A similar antagonism exists with copper. Institute of Medicine updated Estimated Average Requirements (EARs) and Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) for zinc in 2. The current EARs for zinc for women and men ages 1. The RDAs are 8 and 1. RDAs are higher than EARs so as to identify amounts that will cover people with higher than average requirements. RDA for pregnancy equals 1. RDA for lactation equals 1. For infants up to 1. RDA is 3 mg/day and for children ages 1–1. Fitness Edge - Cutting Edge Health and Fitness Information. Low Carb Meal Plans. Luckily, we’ve thoroughly gone through seven of the top diets of 2. On top of that, we’ve also reviewed 3 very bad diets, which you should avoid at all costs. They either don’t work, are unhealthy, or simply do the reverse of what they’re supposed to, and they cause you to gain weight. This will give you a plethora of weight loss plans which you can try, and a few ones you’ll know not to waste your time or money on. Nothing’s worse when it comes to dieting than spending months on a painful diet that’s tough to follow, only to end up a few pounds heavier than when you started. Without a doubt, there’s a diet here for you, which you can get on and succeed with. Otherwise known as the “caveman diet”, the Paleo Diet is based on a fairly simple premise: cavemen didn’t have so many of the health issues that we humans experience today, they usually weren’t overweight, and that’s mostly because they didn’t have so many processed foods. One great benefit of this diet is that there’s no hunger involved; in fact, you get to eat just about until you feel full. Well, the key to this diet is that you’re eating only real, unprocessed foods which aren’t packaged. The premise is that a lot of people’s health problems today stem from the fact that most of the foods we eat today are processed, and by removing the chemically processed “bad foods” from our diet, we can shed weight fairly quickly. The term processed foods generally refers to foods which have been changed in nutritional composition, and they tend to contain a lot of sugars and high fructose corn syrup. That means you’re taking in a lot of empty calories, which is unhealthy and will cause you to gain weight, fast. They also contain a boatload of artificial ingredients (for example, trans fats), which your body can even get addicted to. This means you’re not only engaging in overconsumption, but the foods which you’re consuming will cause you to blow up like a balloon. So, as you can see, cutting out these nasty ingredients will allow you to shed pounds even if you’re eating hearty portions of foods which you enjoy. What Foods, You Might Ask? The Meal Plan. Now, this isn’t a vegetarian or vegan diet so there are plenty of meats which you can enjoy. However, when you’re buying meats, you want to buy ones which are fresh, which haven’t been raised using hormones, and which were naturally raised. Meat & Seafood. That being said, you can enjoy such meats as chicken, pork, beef, bacon, lamb, venison, duck, and more. There are countless recipes you can enjoy with all these meats, and they can make up the better portion of many different breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Now, on the subject of meats, what about seafood? If you’re someone who loves seafood, then you’re in luck. The seafood you can eat includes many delicious shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster, crab, oysters, scallops, and more. As far as regular fish, you can eat haddock, salmon, tuna, trout, swordfish, mackerel, and more. The Juice Diet. Do you keep hearing about the juice diet? Do you ask yourself what is this new juice diet everyone is raving about? Let me tell you. Learn more about best low carb (Atkins) diet plans for fast weight loss, such as paleo, mediterranean, pescaterian, raw, vegan, as well as top 3 worst diets. Juices have lots of micro-nutrients in them and are very low in calories. The best thing about juice diet is that it does not contain any fat. It is moreover rich in. Diet-to-Go is a Diet Delivery Service that Provides Balanced, Freshly Prepared, Real Food for Weight Loss. List of all brands (fully or partially) owned by The Coca-Cola Company. Vegetables. On the topic of vegetables, you can eat virtually all of them, though it’s important to say that you should limit starchy vegetables to some extent (with potatoes being a perfect example). You can eat celery, broccoli spinach, carrots, onions, cauliflower, eggplant, and more. Fruits & Nuts. For fruits, you can eat apples, grapes, oranges, peaches, blueberries, plums, watermelon, raspberries, strawberries, lemons, and more. Most fruits are indeed Paleo, so you can go pretty wild, and delight in all your favorites. You can even enjoy a very healthy variety of nuts and seeds, such as almonds, walnuts, pecans, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and more. Some of the meals you can make are blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs with prosciutto, vegetable egg skillet, apple chicken salad, and chia spinach salad (though there are countless others). As you can see, Paleo is by far a less restrictive diet than most others, on two fronts. It’s less restrictive on the variety of foods you can eat, AND it’s less restrictive on how much you can eat. Click here to learn more about the 3- Week Diet. So, you might be wondering, where did the Paleo diet come from? It’s a newer diet than some of the other ones on this list (though, when you consider that it’s the “caveman” diet, you could also consider it a very old diet as well). It originally came out in 1. Walter Voegtlin wrote a book on the subject, but it wasn’t too popular at the time. The diet was further developed a decade later by two gentlemen named Melvin Konner and Stanley Boyd Eaton. The diet really blew up though when it was popularized by a man named Loren Cordain, who, in 2. The Paleo Diet”, which at the time of this writing, has 7. Amazon and a 4. 5 star rating. Overall, the Paleo Diet is a wonderful, non- restrictive diet, and best of all . The Low- Carb Diet (aka Atkins, Keto)A low- carb diet, as the name would imply, lowers the number of carbohydrates you take into your body to a bare minimum. The most famous low- carb diet is the Atkins diet (similar to the very low- carb keto diet, which is not covered in this article). Mostly, you’ll be avoiding foods which contain a lot of sugar, as well as all manner of breads and pastas. One noteworthy thing about low- carb diets is that they’re not very restrictive in terms of how much food you’re allowed to eat. Like the Paleo diet, you can eat healthy portions of food. The low- carb diet is heavily defined by the foods you avoid, so it makes sense to talk about both the foods to avoid, as well as the foods to take in. You’ll want to avoid drinks which are high in sugar, which include candy, cakes, ice cream, soda, and fruit juices. Unlike with the Mediterranean diet (see next), you want to avoid canola oil, as well as various seeds, such as soybean, sunflower seeds, grape seeds, and corn. All these seeds and canola oil have high levels of Omega 6 in common, which is something you want to avoid. You also want to avoid artificial sweeteners (like Splenda) or virtually any product that’s labeled “low- fat” or “diet”, which includes a lot of cereals and crackers, as well as many diet products. Click here to learn more about the 3- Week Diet. So, What Can You Eat? You can enjoy a lot of meat with this diet such as beef, pork, chicken, etc. Eating grass- fed is best, and you want to go for ones which are naturally raised, and avoid GMOs, just like with the Paleo diet. You can also enjoy a lot of seafood, such as trout, haddock, salmon, lobster, shrimp, scallops, and crab. Some shellfish, such as oysters and especially mussels, do contain higher levels of carbohydrates, and they should be eaten in moderation, if at all. You can also eat eggs on a low- carb diet, and most people on low- carb diets do indeed consume a lot of eggs. Dairy is OK as well, even high- fat dairy, such as butter, heavy cream, yogurt, and cheese. Aside from that, you can also enjoy just about anything a vegan can enjoy, as far as fruits and vegetables go, but of course, you want to avoid things like pita bread, croutons in salad, a lot of salad dressing, etc. Nuts and seeds are, for the most part, on the menu as well, including walnuts, almonds, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds.
